AmeriCorps Work Examples

During the Summer, between my two years of graduate studies, I was an AmeriCorps Member.  I was placed with CLEARCorps/Detroit which is charged with lead poisoning prevention and education.  While there I had two main projects.

Examples:

Relocation Booklet

The first project they had planned for me was a relocation book.  It became a list of housing options for people to relocate to if they found their current housing situation to have lead poison hazards.  This took the form of a three ring binder with individual pages showing a picture of the housing option, and information about rent, number of rooms, and other pertinent information.  The list was also organized by zip-code so people could avoid moving far from where they currently live.  The booklet is setup for easy editing by the staff at CLEARCorps/Detroit as information is found and new housing options are discovered.

Lead-Safe Gardening Practices Pamphlet

The second project I worked on at CLEARCorps/Detroit was a pamphlet on lead-safe gardening practices.  Detroit is making a major push for urban gardening as a way to revive the community and get fresh fruits and vegetables to people living there.  Teamed with professors from Wayne State University, and representatives from the Detroit Health Department and The Greening of Detroit (a non-profit working to create gardening options in Detroit),  I worked to organize and gain the best information possible and combine it all into a usable pamphlet to give out to community members.
